Best Dyson Vacuums 2025

1.Dyson V15 Detect cordless

Dyson V15 Detect Cordless Vacuum Cleaner, Multicolor
  • The most powerful intelligent cordless vacuum.¹ With laser illumination.

Last update on 2025-01-29 / Affiliate links/images from Amazon.

The Dyson V15 Detect is currently the best Dyson vacuum for the majority of people. Our tests revealed that it provides the best price-to-feature ratio and can meet the cleaning needs of the majority of people.

Vacuuming is made easier with its ingenious automation features. Sensors on the main Motorbar floorhead tell the vacuum what kind of floor it’s on and how dirty it is, allowing it to modify suction accordingly. As it does so, the screen on the vacuum’s main body will show you exactly what it is sucking up. The latter feature allows you to be certain that the area of the floor you’re cleaning is dust-free, though it may not be absolutely necessary.

In addition to those unique features, you get incredibly powerful cleaning capabilities. A long battery life, thoughtful and practical design, well-made accessories to handle a variety of cleaning duties, and an extremely maneuverable floorhead that can fit into all the crevices are all features. An exceptional all-around player.

Perhaps the most inventive vacuum brand in the world produces the powerful, technologically advanced Dyson V15 Detect cordless cleaner. The V15 (and the V15 Detect Absolute, which is the same vacuum in a different color) is able to sense the amount and size of particles it’s sucking up, and adjust power in response. The LCD screen on the vacuum’s main body will even provide you with a real-time summary of this data. The alternative headline addition is a green laser on the hard floor floorhead, which illuminates dirt that might otherwise be missed. We’re assuming that the new ‘Detect’ in the name is inspired by one or both of these additions (you can see all the differences in our Dyson V15 Detect vs V11 comparison).

Both the standard V15 Detect and the V15 Detect Absolute (the same vacuum in a different colorway) come with two floorheads: a Fluffy Optic floorhead (the one with the laser, made especially for hard floors) and a Digital Motorbar head (the one that can be used with Auto mode). A variety of additional tools for various cleaning jobs are also available. The specific tools included vary depending on where you live and the model of V15 you purchase, but if you have pets or people with long hair, it’s worth looking for the Hair Screw tool, which was new to this model and works wonders at removing hair from furniture.

Although recharge is a little slow, runtimes are good, lasting up to an hour on a single charge. You’ll like that the battery is detachable and that extra batteries can be bought separately if you require more time.

It is not flawless. It weighs a bit, particularly when in handheld mode. The fact that it turns on with a trigger that must be continuously depressed instead of the one-push button that other Dyson vacuums have is also annoying. After the initial novelty wears off, it’s unclear if features like the laser illumination and real-time dust reports are actually helpful.

It’s also a costly purchase, as you might expect. There are many less expensive options available with fewer bells and whistles that will be adequate for the majority of people, even though the sophisticated features and careful engineering do help justify the price.

Pros

  • Auto suction mode is useful
  • Very powerful suction

Cons

  • Premium pricing

2.Dyson V11 vacuum cleaner

Dyson V11 Plus Cordless Vacuum Cleaner, Nickel/Purple, Large
  • Versatile and cordless for whole-home deep cleaning.

Last update on 2025-01-29 / Affiliate links/images from Amazon.

On our list of the best Dyson vacuums, the Dyson V11 comes in second, but it’s a close race. Although it lacks more sophisticated features like dirt-detection (found on the V15 at #1 and Gen5detect at #3), this 2019 model has great cleaning capabilities. The cost varies based on your location and the offers you find at the time of purchase. It’s a better vacuum if it costs about the same as the V15. The V11 will be a great option and more than satisfy the needs of the majority of people, though, if there is a significant price difference.

Three suction modes are available: Auto, which adjusts to the type of floor you’re cleaning, Boost, which uses more power when necessary, and Eco, which uses less power for a longer cleaning duration. In our tests, we found Auto to work particularly well, and even the supposedly lower-powered Eco was able to effectively deal with large amounts of debris and pet hair. There’s a handy LCD screen that tells you how much juice it has left (in hours and minutes), informs you which mode you’re in and alerts you of any blockages, plus how to clear them. Other features include an excellent hour-long runtime, and an easy-to-empty 0.8 liter bin.

With up to 60 minutes of untethered cleaning time, the Dyson V11 is a strong cordless vacuum. Three suction modes are available: a powerful and battery-saving Boost mode for when you need a little extra oomph, an Auto mode that recognizes the type of floor you’re on and modifies suction accordingly, and a lower-powered Eco mode that provides the longest cleaning time.

During my test, I discovered that the V11 had a respectable amount of power, even in Eco mode, and it easily removed pet hair and both small and large debris. Additionally, I discovered that when switching between carpet and hard floors, Auto mode operated dependably and efficiently. The LCD screen, a recent addition but commonplace starting with this model, is helpful for allowing you to know how much juice you have left, and alerting you of blockages.

The V11 comes with Dyson’s usual range of versatile and well-designed cleaning attachments for various cleaning tasks – although exactly which ones will depend on which model you go for and where you live.Notwithstanding the fact that the V11 is not the newest model, Dyson is still regarded as one of the greatest cordless vacuum brands available (and among the best vacuum brands in general). For more information on the most recent model, see our Dyson Gen5Detect review. This is the replacement for the 2018 V10 (Dyson Cyclone V10 review), and a number of newer and higher-spec options have been released as of this writing.

There are currently two versions of this model: the V11 Extra and the V11 Advanced. The choice of included tools is what makes the base model different. When it was first released, there were more, and not all configurations are accessible in every country.

The fact that you’re not getting the very latest features is reflected in the price. Most versions were originally in the premium price bracket, but have been discounted into the mid-range, making it a good pick if you’re looking for that Dyson engineering on a smaller budget. In fact, we rate the V11 as the best Dyson vacuum.

Pros

  • Effective cleaning heads
  • Powerful suction

Cons

  • Can feel heavy

3.Dyson Gen5detect

Dyson Gen5detect Cordless Vacuum Cleaner
  • Dyson’s most powerful cordless vacuum.
  • Over 115% more power.¹ Up to 70 minutes of run time.²
  • Power button operated for continuous cleaning.

Last update on 2025-01-29 / Affiliate links/images from Amazon.

The Gen5detect line, which includes the Gen5detect as well as the Gen5detect Complete, Outsize, and Absolute, is the best cordless stick Dyson available. It has the company’s most potent cordless motor, which can run at 135,000 rpm. The corded upright Ball Animal (#5) is the only model that provides superior suction.

We constantly complain that Dyson doesn’t even include a clip to lock its trigger in place for longer vacuuming sessions, so don’t undervalue how much easier cleaning will be with a power button instead of the trigger found on older models. We were able to get 75 minutes out of a larger battery that Dyson claims lasts for 70 minutes.

With a single button press, the Gen5detect can be converted into a handheld device. It also features an integrated crevice tool for accessing difficult-to-reach places, an enhanced motor with 262 air watts of suction, and a brighter, more visible Fluffy Optic floor head laser that precisely highlights dust. This is the most powerful Dyson cordless vacuum; the upright Ball Animal 3 at number three is the only item on this list with more power (both are featured in our best vacuum for pet hair guide).

Unfortunately, weight is a trade-off for that power. It feels notably heavy for a stick vacuum, especially when in handheld mode. This is the heaviest Dyson cordless. The price, however, will be the primary deterrent for the majority. Even though the engineering and innovation help to justify it, many of the extra features are still nice-to-haves rather than necessities, and many people won’t find the extra expense to be worth it. Still, it’s an amazing piece of equipment.

With its impressive specifications and cutting-edge features, the Dyson Gen5detect is a powerful cordless vacuum. As of the time this review was updated, it is the best Dyson vacuum available in terms of specifications. It was first introduced in Australia in October 2022, but it wasn’t until May 2023 that it made its way to the US and UK markets.

Previously known as V-somethings, this is the first Dyson stick vacuum to adopt a new naming scheme. In spite of the new name, the Gen5detect bears a strong resemblance to the most recent Dyson stick vacuums, and especially its direct predecessor, the Dyson V15 Detect (see exactly how the two compare in our Dyson V15 vs Gen5detect face-off). Just like that model, it can sense how dirty your floor is and automatically adjust suction in response, as well as providing you with real-time updates on what it’s sucking up, via the LCD screen.

A new, more potent motor that produces more suction (262AW as opposed to 230AW on the V15) and does so more silently is the cause of the new name. During my test, I discovered that the Gen5detect could handle deep cleaning in addition to daily, light cleaning, and it provided excellent suction and dependable cleaning on both carpet and hard floors. As evidenced by its inclusion in top vacuums for pet hair, it consistently collects hair and has efficient detangling capabilities. The dirt-illuminating laser on the Fluffy floorhead for hard floors, which was first seen on the V15 but is now brighter and more practical because it is visible in daylight, particularly impressed me.

Pros

  • Excellent suction
  • Outstanding battery life

Cons

  • Noticeably heavy for a cordless

4.Dyson V8 vacuum cleaner

Dyson V8 Cordless Vacuum Cleaner
  • Lightweight for quick, versatile cordless cleaning.
  • Up to 40 minutes of fade-free Dyson power.¹
  • Two power modes. Powerful mode for everyday cleaning tasks—the optimal balance of power and run time to preserve the lifespan of your battery. MAX mode for intensive spot cleaning.

Last update on 2025-01-29 / Affiliate links/images from Amazon.

With its 2016 launch and subsequent price reduction, the V8 is now the best affordable vacuum on the market if you must have a Dyson. It’s the lightest model on this list and can be easily turned into a handheld, making it perfect for cleaning the car or stairs. In addition to being the lightest Dyson cordless vacuum, you still get the excellent build quality and incredibly maneuverable floorhead.

It runs on a trigger that must be continuously depressed, and its battery life is 40 minutes, which is shorter than that of other devices in this roundup. This model is more appropriate for people with smaller homes because of all of that as well as the dust cup’s smaller size than usual.

The V8 has respectable suction despite its age, thanks to two-tier radial cyclones and a motor spinning at 110,000rpm. In our tests, we found the it worked particularly well on carpet. There’s no Fluffy floorhead included as standard, so it’s worth investing in one as an extra if you have a lot of hard floors (our Dyson tools guide explains more about the various attachment options).

The Dyson V8 was first released in 2016, but as of the time this review was updated, it was still possible to purchase it directly from Dyson as well as through independent retailers. The Dyson V8 (and the V8 Absolute, which has additional tools and comes in slightly different colors) isn’t as tech-rich or high-performing as its predecessors, but it still ranks among the best Dyson vacuums and does well when compared to the top cordless vacuums from other brands today. Additionally, it is far less expensive than many of the more recent models (more on that in a moment).

The V8 comes in a few different versions, just like all the other Dyson stick vacuums. The only significant distinction between them is that they all have the same motor and battery.the number of extra tools they ship with, so do double-check exactly what’s included before you buy.

The design is sleek and clever, as you would expect from Dyson, and everything feels well-made and well-engineered. The suction is good here, but it does not have the super-efficient in-line configuration of later models. Standard and Max are the two modes that are controlled by a toggle switch. With an occasional blast on the higher setting, we discovered that it could effectively collect any leftover debris while picking up the majority of it on the lower setting. While the seven minutes in Max mode is a little short, the battery life on standard suction mode is respectable, and the recharge time is significantly longer than that of contemporary Dyson vacuums.

The design is still fully functional and will meet the needs of the majority of users, even though it lacks features like sensors that modify suction based on dirt levels and floor type and an LCD screen that shows usage information.

Numerous compatible tools are available that can be attached to the vacuum wand or used as a handheld device by mounting directly onto the motor unit. The majority of the tools are essentially the same designs as the more recent Dysons, and they are all well-made and incredibly efficient. With the help of these tools, the Dyson V8 can be used for more than just floors; it can also be used to clean upholstery, clean the inside of your car, and even get into ceiling corners.

Pros

  • Versatile 2-in-1 design
  • Affordable for a Dyson

Cons

  • Long recharge time

5.Dyson Ball Animal

Dyson Ball Animal Upright Vacuum – Corded
  • Radial root cyclone technology captures more dirt and microscopic dust
  • Self-adjusting cleaner head Seals in suction across carpets and hard floors
  • Rides on a Ball and steers easily into difficult places

Last update on 2025-01-29 / Affiliate links/images from Amazon.

The Ball Animal 3, also referred to as simply the Ball Animal in the UK and Australia, is one of the few outliers in Dyson’s line of cordless stick vacuums. In the current lineup, this is the only upright vacuum. A cordless stick vacuum won’t be able to match this beast’s power if suction is your top concern. It’s a great option if you want a heavy-duty vacuum that can handle large amounts of dirt or sticky pet hair. Its large dust up also means you won’t have to empty it every two minutes, which is why we rank it as one of the best upright vacuums available.

We tested it and discovered that it did a fantastic job deep cleaning the carpet. In fact, at times it was a little too sucky, requiring a fair bit of effort to push on deep-pile carpet. The ball also means handling is good, and you’ll be able to pivot into corners with ease.

But there are concessions. It is corded, to start. If you’re used to cordless models, you’ll likely be a little annoyed to find yourself tethered to a wall once more, even though the cord is long (30 feet/10 meters). Secondly, it is incredibly heavy and large. Heaving up stairs and over thresholds was a real pain for our tester; keep that in mind if your home has several floors or a more complicated layout.

The upright, corded Dyson Ball Animal vacuum puts suction strength and dust capacity ahead of portability. There used to be two groups of vacuum buyers: the cylinder snobs and the upright evangelists. These groups never crossed paths. The majority of people today have switched to cordless stick vacuums and haven’t looked back. However, it is evident that some people are still devoted to corded vacuums, and Dyson’s Ball Animal is still the best option for those who are married to the corded upright in particular.

I gave one a try to see how it stacks up against the other top upright vacuums available today and whether it’s worth the switch from one of the best cordless vacuums. Ball Animal 3 was released in 2022 and is an update on the Ball Animal 2; in the UK and Australia it’s simply known as the Ball Animal, but it’s essentially the same machine, so don’t worry that you might be buying a less advanced model.

The Ball Animal is well-liked by allergy sufferers because of its numerous filtration systems (which are described in a lot of technical terms to sound particularly fancy). It is unquestionably very sucky and removes dust from the very center of carpets. I also liked the large bin capacity, which was a nice change from the daily emptying that most cordless vacuums require.

The pull-out hose is a little stiff and awkward, and the suction power can occasionally be difficult to use—you need Popeye-level muscles to push this vacuum along a deep pile carpet. The cord comes next. It’s quite difficult to put up with this bothersome trip hazard once you’ve switched to cordless.

Pros

  • Amazing on carpets
  • Huge bin capacity

Cons

  • Amazing on carpets

What do the different Dyson naming conventions mean?

The naming schemes used by Dyson can be a little perplexing. Each model has a standard iteration, such as Gen5detect, and then different model names, such as Gen5detect Outsize/Absolute, which indicate differences in the product’s size, tools, attachments, or availability. Keep in mind that you can also combine these names, for example, Outsize Absolute. The primary ones are:

Absolute: Absolute Dysons come with extra heads and advanced HEPA filtering, and they are typically only available for purchase on Dyson’s website. They might have a unique color as well.

Outsize: As the name implies, these Dysons are larger than regular ones, featuring wider floor heads and larger bins. Additionally, there is a Plus option (also known as Outsize Plus) that includes additional heads and tools. In the UK, oversized iterations are generally unavailable.

Slim: This one should go without saying; Slim refers to Dyson models that are thinner.

Animal: The pet groom tool, which collects hair from pets with medium or long hair, is one of the accessories offered by Animal Dysons.

Regardless of the version you select, be sure to carefully review the included features, as these can differ by region and some attachments are only available directly from Dyson.

How we test Dyson vacuum cleaners

The same exacting testing regimen that we apply to every vacuum we review is also applied to the best Dyson vacuum cleaners. We begin by testing the ability of the main floorhead (and any suitable attachments) to handle hair and assessing each vacuum cleaner’s performance in collecting both fine dust and larger debris. We also measure the noise levels of each vacuum at all power settings and test all of the included accessories.
