In addition to those unique features, you get incredibly powerful cleaning capabilities. Both the standard V15 Detect and the V15 Detect Absolute (the same vacuum in a different colorway) come with two floorheads: a Fluffy Optic floorhead (the one with the laser, made especially for hard floors) and a Digital Motorbar head (the one that can be used with Auto mode). Although it lacks more sophisticated features like dirt-detection (found on the V15 at #1 and Gen5detect at #3), this 2019 model has great cleaning capabilities. The cost varies based on your location and the offers you find at the time of purchase. It’s a better vacuum if it costs about the same as the V15. The V11 will be a great option and more than satisfy the needs of the majority of people, though, if there is a significant price difference.

Three suction modes are available: Auto, which adjusts to the type of floor you’re cleaning, Boost, which uses more power when necessary, and Eco, which uses less power for a longer cleaning duration.In our tests, we found Auto to work particularly well, and even the supposedly lower-powered Eco was able to effectively deal with large amounts of debris and pet hair. There’s a handy LCD screen that tells you how much juice it has left (in hours and minutes), informs you which mode you’re in and alerts you of any blockages, plus how to clear them. Other features include an excellent hour-long runtime, and an easy-to-empty 0.8 liter bin.

As of the time this review was updated, it is the best Dyson vacuum available in terms of specifications. It was first introduced in Australia in October 2022, but it wasn’t until May 2023 that it made its way to the US and UK markets.

Previously known as V-somethings, this is the first Dyson stick vacuum to adopt a new naming scheme. In spite of the new name, the Gen5detect bears a strong resemblance to the most recent Dyson stick vacuums, and especially its direct predecessor, the Dyson V15 Detect (see exactly how the two compare in our Dyson V15 vs Gen5detect face-off). Just like that model, it can sense how dirty your floor is and automatically adjust suction in response, as well as providing you with real-time updates on what it’s sucking up, via the LCD screen.

A new, more potent motor that produces more suction (262AW as opposed to 230AW on the V15) and does so more silently is the cause of the new name. It’s the lightest model on this list and can be easily turned into a handheld, making it perfect for cleaning the car or stairs. In addition to being the lightest Dyson cordless vacuum, you still get the excellent build quality and incredibly maneuverable floorhead.

It runs on a trigger that must be continuously depressed, and its battery life is 40 minutes, which is shorter than that of other devices in this roundup. This model is more appropriate for people with smaller homes because of all of that as well as the dust cup’s smaller size than usual.

The V8 has respectable suction despite its age, thanks to two-tier radial cyclones and a motor spinning at 110,000rpm. In our tests, we found the it worked particularly well on carpet. The suction is good here, but it does not have the super-efficient in-line configuration of later models. Standard and Max are the two modes that are controlled by a toggle switch. With an occasional blast on the higher setting, we discovered that it could effectively collect any leftover debris while picking up the majority of it on the lower setting. While the seven minutes in Max mode is a little short, the battery life on standard suction mode is respectable, and the recharge time is significantly longer than that of contemporary Dyson vacuums.

The design is still fully functional and will meet the needs of the majority of users, even though it lacks features like sensors that modify suction based on dirt levels and floor type and an LCD screen that shows usage information.

The Ball Animal 3, also referred to as simply the Ball Animal in the UK and Australia, is one of the few outliers in Dyson’s line of cordless stick vacuums. In the current lineup, this is the only upright vacuum. A cordless stick vacuum won’t be able to match this beast’s power if suction is your top concern. It’s a great option if you want a heavy-duty vacuum that can handle large amounts of dirt or sticky pet hair. Its large dust up also means you won’t have to empty it every two minutes, which is why we rank it as one of the best upright vacuums available.

We tested it and discovered that it did a fantastic job deep cleaning the carpet. In fact, at times it was a little too sucky, requiring a fair bit of effort to push on deep-pile carpet. The ball also means handling is good, and you’ll be able to pivot into corners with ease.

But there are concessions. It is corded, to start. If you’re used to cordless models, you’ll likely be a little annoyed to find yourself tethered to a wall once more, even though the cord is long (30 feet/10 meters). Secondly, it is incredibly heavy and large. Heaving up stairs and over thresholds was a real pain for our tester; keep that in mind if your home has several floors or a more complicated layout.

The upright, corded Dyson Ball Animal vacuum puts suction strength and dust capacity ahead of portability. There used to be two groups of vacuum buyers: the cylinder snobs and the upright evangelists. These groups never crossed paths. The majority of people today have switched to cordless stick vacuums and haven’t looked back. However, it is evident that some people are still devoted to corded vacuums, and Dyson’s Ball Animal is still the best option for those who are married to the corded upright in particular.

I gave one a try to see how it stacks up against the other top upright vacuums available today and whether it’s worth the switch from one of the best cordless vacuums. Ball Animal 3 was released in 2022 and is an update on the Ball Animal 2; in the UK and Australia it’s simply known as the Ball Animal, but it’s essentially the same machine, so don’t worry that you might be buying a less advanced model.

The Ball Animal is well-liked by allergy sufferers because of its numerous filtration systems (which are described in a lot of technical terms to sound particularly fancy). It is unquestionably very sucky and removes dust from the very center of carpets. I also liked the large bin capacity, which was a nice change from the daily emptying that most cordless vacuums require.

The pull-out hose is a little stiff and awkward, and the suction power can occasionally be difficult to use—you need Popeye-level muscles to push this vacuum along a deep pile carpet. The cord comes next. It’s quite difficult to put up with this bothersome trip hazard once you’ve switched to cordless.

What do the different Dyson naming conventions mean?

The naming schemes used by Dyson can be a little perplexing. Each model has a standard iteration, such as Gen5detect, and then different model names, such as Gen5detect Outsize/Absolute, which indicate differences in the product’s size, tools, attachments, or availability.
