Millie’s advice is never to buy a pram or pushchair without trying it out first in-store: “Mamas and Papas or John Lewis have an incredible selection of all the leading brands and styles,” she says. I asked her what to look for when hands-on testing.
“Consider how easy it is to fold down, for putting in the back of the car or storing at home,” she says. “Compact options are great for lifting in and out of a vehicle, but they can feel harder to push, especially on your wrists and when navigating rough terrain. There is also the risk of the system tipping if you hang a bag or some shopping onto the handlebars. If you know you will be carrying more gear, I would opt for something much sturdier with bigger wheels and a larger base to attachment ratio.”

Although objectively the Silver Cross is the best after a month of testing, my partner and I found it hard to choose a winner from this year’s crop of prams and strollers. However, we ultimately decided on Silver Cross, which is well-known for its vintage “Balmoral” baby carriage, which has been the preferred stroller of the royal family for over a century.
This is the most recent version of the Reef 2, which is also a third of the price and much more useful than the Balmoral. It still features luxurious fabric and elegant chrome and faux-leather touches and, of all the seats I examined, it has by far the best cushioning. My cooing mother described it as the ‘Rolls Royce’ of pushchairs. Without a doubt, the magnetic “Genius harness system” is a Rolls-Royce.touch, making the clicking and unclicking uniquely smooth and satisfying. Overall, it was the one I most wanted to show off my baby in.
Unlike the other brands I tested, the carry cot bassinet is sold separately, costing an extra £250, but as you’d expect for the price, it is supreme in quality, with the softest mattress and lovely matching quilted cream interior. With its unique ability to fold up for convenient storage and be approved for overnight sleeping, it doubles as a Moses basket, making it perfect for travel.
In actuality, despite its exquisite features, I did not fall in love with the Reef right away. Though its large tyres and four-wheel suspension system are designed for all-terrain and passed all our tests on that front, it’s not quite as sporty when navigating tough ground as the others I tried and it was initially the trickiest for me to work out how to fold down.
Once I got the hang of it, however, its one-handed mechanism actually turned out to be the smoothest to fold and the most compact to stow. The Reef’s also reasonably eco-friendly, with vegan leather accents and outer fabrics made from recycled plastic bottles. After considering all of this, we decided that it was the best premium choice.
Pros
- with royal credentials
- sturdy and sophisticated
Cons
- you have to buy the carry cot bassinet separately
2.Joie Versatrax
- Lightweight & Travel-Friendly: Weighing under 15 lb. the Joie Nutmeg Travel Stroller is designed for on-the-go parents, offering easy portability without compromising on comfort or durability.
- One-Hand Compact Fold: The nutmeg features a convenient one-hand fold system, making it quick and easy to collapse the stroller for storage or to store in a fully-packed trunk.
- Baby to Toddler Use: Suitable for babies up to toddlers (up to 50 lb.) the Nutmeg stroller grows with your child, making it a long-lasting practical choice.

I must admit that I adore Joie. The brand is incredibly practical, but it lacks the star power of an Egg or a Bugaboo. No nonsense, not too many frills and an easy run around. The assembly was straight-forward, it was relatively light and easy to manoeuvre and it folds down easily.
Judging by this model they’ve come on leaps and bounds on the style front. All leatherette handle-bar and nicely padded grey flannel seat. But for me, the real joy of this Joie is its shopping basket. It’s high-sided and huge, the largest I have come across in six years of pram-pushing.
The large wheels are an added bonus because I spend a lot of time pushing on long grass because I live close to a heath. To make it easier to get through a particularly rough area, you can also lock the front wheels. It is compatible with the “Ramble XL” carrycot from birth, and it has an i-Snug infant carrier that can be used as a car seat or attached to a stroller. It’s really comfortable, and my two-year-old happily curled up in it.
Then there is the cost. Even though it lacks star power, it is unquestionably more affordable and useful than the other strollers in this area.
Pros
- its no nonsense practicality and super-roomy shopping basket
Cons
- it’s always sold out
3.Mamas and Papas Ocarro
- Room to Grow: Use from birth (Compatible with Maxi-Cosi and Nuna car seats, car seat adapter SOLD SEPARATELY). Get an infant stroller that transforms to match the sprouting of their little limbs. This Mompush stroller provides a secure ride throughout early development. You can go from stroller to bassinet in minutes, with full recline for a comfy newborn ride
- Open Up to the World: Customize their positioning to suit their mood for that day with the reversible seat on these strollers for newborns. Go parent facing for extra reassurance, or outward-facing for visual stimulation, this modern baby stroller lets you decide
- Smooth Strolling: The omnidirectional luxury stroller wheels allow for effortless 360-degree maneuvering. Paired with sturdy advanced suspension for exceptional cushioning. The newborn stroller even has a faux leather stroller handle for added grip and an easy glide

As a new mother, I now think of Mamas and Papas as a store with great selection, quality, and customer service. Its well-known Ocarro travel system has also been a success. I tested the six-piece set, which comes with a pushchair and bassinet, as well as a matching changing bag, footmuff, cup holder, and car seat adapters.
It was the simplest to assemble and switch between attachments right out of the box, and it folds down one-handed for convenient storage. It would be an understatement to say that I lack coordination and am unhelpful when given instructions, and this was one of the few models that didn’t make me anxious when I was moving around and switching between modes.
One of the more conventional prams in terms of design, it comes in a variety of subdued grey and black hues and features leatherette, quilted cotton, and brushed twill accents. In contrast to the boxy shapes of most other models, the bassinet’s snug, curved design adds a cozier element, and the padded seat with cushioned chest pads and a head-hugging pillow feels nice and comfortable.
I found this to be the Goldilocks of prams—not too big, not too small, with puncture-proof tires and an ergonomic chassis that made it easy to handle a variety of terrains—and it was reasonably priced for the quality and versatility it provided.
Pros
- good quality
- stylish
Cons
- t’s reasonably heavy
