Between the Hisense U7N and U9N, the Hisense U8N is the company’s next-to-top mini-LED TV series for 2024. By improving brightness over its predecessor and honing picture processing with an emphasis on local dimming performance, this new series continues the trend of the Hisense U8K, one of the top TVs of 2023, solidifying its position as one of the top mini-LED TVs of the year.

The new Hisense U8N performs dramatically better than most TVs, especially in terms of peak brightness, which is almost twice as good as what I measured on the Hisense U8K. Most TVs only make slight improvements over the model from the previous year. Additionally, local dimming has been enhanced, and the TV’s sound quality appears to have improved as well. Given the tenacity with which both brands have demonstrated in recent years to not only break through, but to dominate the US TV market, it is perhaps not surprising that many of these performance enhancements are similar to those I discovered on the new TCL QM851G mini-LED model that competes with it.

With two HDMI 2.1 ports that support 4K at 144 Hz, VRR that includes FreeSync Premium Pro, ALLM, and Dolby Vision gaming, the Hisense U8N largely shares the same gaming features as the U8K. Although we would really like to see four HDMI 2.1 ports in the best gaming TVs, those features, along with a Game Bar menu for real-time picture settings adjustments, make it an excellent gaming TV. In the US, Google TV powers the U8N smart TV platform, while in the UK, Australia, and other countries, Hisense uses its own VIDAA platform.

The new Hi-View Engine PRO processor found in Hisense U8N series TVs “leverages deep learning” to provide AI-powered dynamic HDR tone mapping, face detection, and detail enhancement, the company claims. According to specifications, the U8N series TVs’ mini-LED backlight has twice as many local dimming zones as the U8K series models from the previous year. Additionally, it features a 50W 2.1.2-channel built-in speaker system with support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, an anti-glare low-reflection screen, Wi-Fi 6E for streaming, and an ATSC 3.0 tuner in the US to receive next-generation TV broadcasts.

Dolby Vision (IQ), HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG formats are supported by the U8N series for high dynamic range, and a Filmmaker Mode allows for an accurate, director-approved image right out of the box without requiring you to adjust picture settings. Additionally, the U8N series has IMAX Enhanced certification.

With measured color results of 96.3% of UHDA-P3 (the color space used for mastering 4K Blu-rays, digital cinema, and streaming releases) and 81.9% of BT.2020, the U8N also demonstrated strong color performance. Though grayscale accuracy came in slightly above that point, color accuracy in Filmmaker mode was below the margin of error threshold we use for a benchmark (i.e., if it were any more accurate, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference anyway). This was made possible by setting the Gamma preset in the TV’s picture Brightness settings sub-menu to 2.2, which brought the accuracy to a high enough level.

Pros

  • Low-reflection screen
  • Powerful brightness and local dimming

Cons

  • Picture fade with off-center viewing

The LG G4, the company’s flagship OLED for 2024, offers several improvements over the superb LG G3 OLED from 2023. Although we already knew that the G3 pushed the limits of conventional OLED technology, the G4 under review goes above and beyond, making it unquestionably one of the greatest TVs on the market right now.

The upgrades made in the LG G4 OLED have meant price increases across the board in the US and UK. Australian pricing has increased only a few dollars for the 55-inch and 65-inch models, yet pricing for the larger 77- and 83-inch models actually decreased for customers down under. The 83-inch model also gets a special mention for now featuring Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology in 2024 and customers in the US and UK who want the biggest of big-screen thrills have the option of a 97-inch variant.

In addition to a new Alpha 11 processor that brings a host of new AI-powered features, the second-generation MLA technology used in the G4 OLED has a higher maximum peak brightness and puts it farther away from the step-down LG C4 OLED. The new panel and processor work together to create an absolutely amazing effect in practice, giving the content better contrast and a more cinematic feel overall. Although the usefulness of some of the new features is questionable, colors are also more accurate than they were previously, and AI is obviously being used more.

The built-in speakers on the LG G4 perform admirably if you don’t have access to one of the best soundbars. Considering that this is a flat-screen TV with little room for speaker drivers, the dialogue in particular sounds clear and there is a respectable amount of bass. However, you should spend money on an external speaker if you want blockbuster sound.

The G4 OLED only carries on the tradition of the previous G3 OLED, which we previously rated as one of the best gaming TVs. With support for 4K at 120 Hz on all four of its HDMI 2.1 inputs (and 144 Hz for PC gamers), LG is still one of the few TV manufacturers that offers Dolby Vision gaming. Additionally, the new processor seeks to further minimize input lag with VRR and ALLM. The G4 OLED is the best if you’re an avid gamer.

In terms of design, the LG G4 is a stunning TV with a nearly bezel-less construction that will stand out if you decide to wall mount it. Many consumers are happy to learn that LG now comes with a stand in the box with the more well-liked 55- and 65-inch models; previously, it was an optional item that had to be purchased separately. In the US and the UK, larger screens (77 inches and up) still only come with a wall mount, but Australian customers receive a stand regardless of the size they choose.

There are plenty of amazing screens in 2024, such as the Sony Bravia 9 and Samsung S95D, which are both QD-OLED and mini-LED champions, respectively. It’s evident why LG is still committed to offering a purely conventional W-OLED format in the G4. The contrast is as good as it gets right now, and the image quality is still among the best. Brighter daytime viewing is better than ever before, and your home theater experience will only get better as the lights go down. Naturally, there are less expensive options, like the LG C4, but this time around, the distinctions between LG’s flagship and mid-range sets are more obvious.

    Pros

    • Improved brightness levels
    • Second-generation MLA technology is excellent

    Cons

    • No stand with larger screen sizes in some countries

    3.Hisense U6N

Hisense 55-Inch Class U6 Series Mini-LED ULED 4K UHD Google Smart TV (55U6N, 2024 Model) – QLED, Motion Rate 240, HDR 10+, Full Array Local Dimming, Game Mode Plus, Alexa Compatibility
    • MINI-LED WITH FULL ARRAY LOCAL DIMMING – Experience the latest in backlight technology. Mini-LED is big on details, showing you the stars in the night sky. Add in the Full Array Local Dimming Pro and every game, show and movie comes into crisp focus. Once you see the darkest darks, whitest whites and brightest brights, there’s no going back
    • QLED QUANTUM DOT COLOR – See color like you’ve never seen it before. QLED Quantum Dot Technology, significantly broadens the range of color you perceive to create over a billion individual shades. So, you can soak up every wave of the Caribbean Sea and every brushstroke of the desert sunset
    • DOLBY VISION & ATMOS – Get transported through the screen. Dolby Vision captures even the most subtle emotions flickering across an actor’s face during a dark night scene. And the multidimensional sound of Dolby Atmos puts you smack-dab in the action, whether that’s a jungle, urbanscape or rocketship

The Hisense U6/U6K was replaced by the more affordable Hisense U6/U6N, which was released in 2024. In Hisense’s 2024 ULED lineup, it is the entry-level model that comes after the U7N and U8/U8N. Although it lacks the more costly models’ gaming features, such as HDMI 2.1 bandwidth and black frame insertion, it can still play games at 4k @ 60Hz with VRR and HDR turned on. If you want a higher frame rate, you can also play games at up to 1440p @ 120Hz. The TV uses Hisense’s Hi-View Engine chipset, which optimizes specific settings to enhance the user’s viewing experience, and it does have a local dimming feature to improve contrast.

A decent TV for a variety of uses is the Hisense U6N. Unfortunately, the TV’s limited viewing angle makes it unsuitable for use in a group environment. Although there is some noticeable blooming around bright highlights when they are against a dark background, its high contrast ratio still makes it look great in a dark room. Because of its excellent SDR brightness, it also works well in bright environments. However, it struggles to handle direct reflections, so you should avoid putting a lamp directly in front of the screen.

The Hisense U6N is a good TV-watching device. With so many apps available on the Google TV interface, finding the newest, most popular shows is simple. Although direct reflections from lights in front of the screen are noticeable, it overcomes some glare in a bright room thanks to its excellent SDR brightness and satisfactory reflection handling. Low-resolution content doesn’t appear overly soft thanks to the TV’s good upscaling capabilities, but low-quality content smoothing is subpar, resulting in noticeable artifacts in cable channels or low-bitrate streams. Unfortunately, because the image rapidly deteriorates when viewed from the sides of the screen, the TV’s limited viewing angle makes it a bad option for watching shows with friends.

For watching sports, the Hisense U6N is a good device. There is very little blur behind fast-moving players because of the TV’s excellent response time. Although lights positioned directly in front of the screen produce noticeable reflections, its excellent SDR brightness and satisfactory reflection handling make it appropriate for a well-lit environment. When watching sports like football and hockey, where there are large areas of uniform color, the TV’s gray uniformity is only passable; there is a dirty screen effect in the middle and the edges of the screen are noticeably dimmer than the middle.

    Pros

    • Very good response time for minimal blur behind fast motion
    • Very good SDR brightness makes it useable in bright rooms.

    Cons

    • Image degrades when viewed from the sides.

    4.LG Evo C3 OLED TV

    • LG OLED EVO: The LG OLED evo is powered by the a9 AI Processor Gen6—made exclusively for LG OLED—for beautiful picture and performance. The Brightness Booster improves brightness so you get luminous picture and high contrast, even in well-lit rooms. • ULTRA SLIM DESIGN: The LG OLED evo C3 blends into the background with an almost invisible bezel for a seamless look. When you’re finished watching, display paintings, photos and other content to blend the LG OLED evo C3 into your space.

Like all OLED TVs, the C3’s design is sleek and thin because it uses an OLED panel. The panel is surrounded by a quarter-inch-thick metal band, and the glass extends from edge to edge. A thin black border surrounds the active image, and the bottom edge is half an inch thick and slightly wider. The infrared remote receiver, indicator LED, and far-field microphones are located in a tiny rectangular bulge in the center of the TV’s bottom edge. The screen can be mounted on a wall or rest on the rectangular metal table stand that comes with it.

All of the other ports on the TV face left, while the permanently attached power cable protrudes from the middle of the rear panel. Four HDMI ports (all 4K120, one eARC), three USB ports, two 3.5mm ports for RS-232C system integration, an Ethernet port, an optical audio output, an antenna/cable connector, and an IR blaster cable are all included.

The included Magic Remote is almost the same as the C2’s, and LG hasn’t changed the design of its remote control from earlier models. With a slightly curved profile and a circular navigation pad in the center that has a clickable scroll wheel instead of a button, it’s a thin, glossy black plastic wand. Below the navigation pad are four color buttons and service buttons for Amazon Alexa, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, LG Channels, Netflix, and Sling. Above the navigation pad are power and menu buttons, a number pad, volume and channel rockers, and a pinhole microphone.

The C3 runs on LG’s WebOS smart TV platform, just like all of its other TVs. The majority of popular streaming services, such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+, Hulu, Max, Netflix, Twitch, and YouTube (but not Crunchyroll), are integrated into this well-designed system. The TV’s far-field microphones allow you to access the Amazon Alexa voice assistant hands-free, and it supports Apple AirPlay for streaming from your iPad, iPhone, or Mac.

The C3 can function as a smart home hub thanks to LG’s WebOS, just like Samsung’s Tizen smart TV platform. Though it also supports Matter-compatible devices and a few smart lights, smart plugs, blind rollers, and thermostats from Bosch, Ikea, Philips, and TP-Link, the interface is LG-centric and primarily functions with LG’s ThinQ-equipped appliances. Any connected device that supports Alexa can be controlled by voice, but they won’t show up on the WebOS Home Hub screen or display visual data like camera feeds.

    Pros

    • Incredibly low input lag
    • Fantastic color and contrast

    Cons

    • No ATSC 3.0 tuner

    5.Panasonic Z95A OLED TV

Panasonic Z95 Series (2024 Model) 65-inch OLED 4K Ultra HD Smart Fire TV, Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+ Adaptive, 144Hz Refresh Rate and Hands-Free Alexa – 65Z95AP
    • A Smart TV with Stunning Color Accuracy and Brightness: The latest OLED panel with micro-lens-array technology and HCX Pro AI Processor MKII bring immersive entertainment experience.
    • Multi HDR format with Optimized Picture: All HDR formats, HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and HLG, are supported. With advanced intelligent sensing, HDR10+ Adaptive and Dolby Vision IQ deliver optimized natural picture that adjusts to room brightness.
    • 360 Soundscape Pro tuned by Technics: Integrated front-array, upward and side-firing speakers with Dolby Atmos transport you from sofa to hear of the action.

In the past, Panasonic was a well-known brand in televisions, but that has long since changed in the United States. For almost ten years, the only Panasonic screens available here have been professional displays meant for content mastering, even though other regions frequently saw its TVs on the shelves. As Panasonic brings three new TV models back to the US, that changes. The ambitious Z95A, a flagship OLED TV, is at the top. The brightest OLED panel we’ve seen on a TV, a sophisticated spatial audio speaker system, and a robust feature set make it worth, even though it’s only available in 65 inches.

The upper corners of the Z95, where the screen is unobstructed, demonstrate how thin the OLED panel is—about 0.2 inches. Thanks to a black plastic casing that houses all of the electronics and connections, as well as the subwoofer and speaker drivers that fire upward and sideways, the TV thickens significantly to 2.3 inches across the majority of the back. From the front, where a plain black metal band frames the screen, its depth is invisible.

The bottom edge of the TV doesn’t have a typical bezel like most recent TVs, but instead holds a 2.4-inch-wide black speaker grille that covers the front-firing drivers. A small silver Panasonic logo sits in the middle of the grille. A status LED can be seen under the left side of the grille, and behind it are a power/input button and a mic mute switch.

Since TV audio can almost always be enhanced or replaced with a separate external speaker system, such as a soundbar, subwoofer, and satellites, for significantly better sound, we don’t usually test it. Nevertheless, the Z95A boasts one of the most sophisticated speaker systems we’ve seen integrated into a television. It has two 15W side-firing drivers, two 15W upward-firing drivers, a 20W woofer, and an 80W front-firing speaker array. With Dolby Atmos support that can include height channels, this gives the TV far more spatial audio capabilities than most. Both models are far more capable than the basic downward-firing speaker drivers found in the majority of other TVs, and the 75-inch Hisense U9N has a similar 4.1.2-channel speaker system.

    Pros

    • Wide, generally accurate colors
Incredibly bright for an OLED TV

    Cons

    • Only available in 65 inches
