With a laptop in a separate bay, the Chasing Innovation Gladius Mini comes in a stylish backpack that looks similar to one a photographer may use to transport their body and equipment. The drone is rather simple to set up, and it comes with a towel that allows you to safely place it on jagged seaside rocks.
The protective caps for the 50m or 100m tether line are easily lost, which is a drawback. Other than that, the drone is well-made, able to withstand a few bumps underwater, and can be thrown into the sea once set up.
The vivid hue is also easily noticeable. Depth-lock (similar to altitude hold on a flying drone) and 64GB storage are smart features. The drone responds quickly thanks to its five thrusters.– useful as you need to tilt the body up or down to look around. You can lock the pitch, but the camera (and accompanying 1,200-lumen lights) cannot be separately turned, making this a real pilot’s craft, and fun with it.
The thoughtful app is easily operated, and VR compatible, and the 4K camera produces great results. Our only complaint is that in rougher seas, the image stabilization could be better. Overall, though, it’s a great product.
Pros
- 4K UHD camera
- Impressive depth capability
- Compact and portable
Cons
- Pricey accessories
- Limited mobility

The Fifish can be purchased as a basic V6, and the robot arm accessory is included with the V6S. This is a decent ROV on its own, with a maximum depth of 100 meters and a corresponding tether. With a phone-monitoring slot, the controller looks a lot like a drone controller. Although it’s simple to use and the posture lock (or “hover”) keeps position precisely, we found the white pad to be a little too generic. However, it does feature a lock-depth button (similar to hover), which is helpful to have at your fingertips.
Since many of the features, like the dual 2000-lumen lights and 4K video, are more expensive elsewhere, this might be the most affordable method to add a robot claw with more 5kg (11lbs) gripping force to your underwater expeditions.
This will be ideal for positioning other equipment remotely or attempting to grip and lift sea-floor discoveries. There is also now a sleek black ‘Expert’ edition of this drone with 6,000-lumen lighting and the option of on-shore power for longer missions, and other accessories on offer including sonar sensors. We must admit we liked the option of VR head tracking (the drone ‘looks’ with you) and appreciated that a cable reel was in the bundle.
Pros
- VR head tracking
- 4K UHD camera
- Advanced maneuverability
Cons
- Shorter battery life

In many ways, this is a scaled-down counterpart of Chasing’s Gladius Mini. It has the same eye-catching yellow color and aesthetically integrates the agile five-thruster design. This enables the body (and hence the camera) to be tilted up and down. The depth lock feature is still present from its larger sibling, so don’t worry if you think that would make it difficult to manage.
What has caused Chasing to cut the price so drastically? First off, the camera is a more subdued 1080p model that requires only 250 lumens of light to operate (this shouldn’t be a problem at shorter depths). Second, although the surface end is a floating Wi-Fi buoy, the umbilical is much shorter, so you can toss it in the water as long as you’re within Wi-Fi range of it (admittedly not far given the water), you have control, maximizing the use of the 15m (50ft) tether.
Lastly, there is no physical controller unit because all of the control is done through the software on the screen. As a result, you should be careful not to get water on the touch screen. Positive aspects include the drone’s built-in battery, which is the only component you’ll need to charge, and the 720p live feed, which is perfect for piloting. This will be the only underwater drone most people need, and the app is feature-rich, even allowing live social media streaming. This could enhance the enjoyment of a boat journey or perhaps provide educational value to the exploration of lakeside pools.
You can take your love of taking pictures underwater with the best underwater housings for cameras and cellphones. A decent housing will provide you with the means to produce amazing sub-aquatic photos, regardless of whether you wish to go snorkeling or scuba diving and whether you’re using an iPhone or the newest professional mirrorless camera.
Although there are several excellent waterproof cameras available, many of which can descend to remarkable depths, waterproof housings and cases continue to be superior for a variety of reasons. In terms of camera technology, waterproof compacts are not very advanced; their sensors are often smaller than those of the top DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, and they lack sophisticated focusing systems and high frame rates.
Additionally, it makes sense to purchase a less expensive housing for your smartphone if you mostly take pictures using one of the best GoPros or smartphones for photography, as this will probably cost less than a dedicated tough camera. With alternatives for both shallow and deep dives, we have divided this guide into sections covering housings for DSLRs, action cameras, mirrorless cameras, and cellphones.
Pros
- Affordable
- Compact and portable
Cons
- Short battery life
- Limited depth

The high-frequency radio utilized for the live video feedback on aerial drones does not perform well when traveling underwater. Because the PowerRay is powered by two horizontal props, it has a 70-meter (230-foot) umbilical line that lies gently behind it. Additionally, the body has a central vertical thruster that makes depth changes simple and prevents the communication connection from tangling.
The Ray includes two dimmable 450-lumen headlight lamps to illuminate your subject, which can be recorded in 4,000 x 3,000-pixel stills or 4K (30 frames per second) because the depths, even the first few meters, can be cloudy. The camera is more than capable of handling the depths that the PowerRay can, with a maximum ISO of 1600, but the 1/2.3-inch sensor could be bigger in a perfect world. 32 or 64Gb SD storage is provided depending on the version you choose, or you can put your own card in.
The basic video-shooting drone, the PowerRay Explorer, is available, as is the more costly PowerRay Wizard edition, which includes the Zeiss VR One Goggles, a carry-on-friendly travel case, a bait dropper, and the PowerSeeker sonar device, which can detect the underwater landscape and use temperature data to identify fishing hotspots.
Although there is a significant price difference between the Explorer and Wizard versions in some retailers, the latter is not just entertaining; it makes it easier to enjoy the 1080p live feedback than it would on a bright day on your phone screen.
Pros
- Decent camera
- 4K resolution
Cons
- Umbilical could be longer

The M2 makes it clear why Chasing is a well-known name in the ROV industry. Everyone can pilot across the water at a cool 3 knots thanks to the joypad-style control that operates the eight corner-mounted thrusters.
With its Ò/1.8 12 megapixels, 1 / 2.3 CMOS, and electronic stabilization, the built-in camera should not interfere with your video. The field of view is quite broad at 152˚. You can record at 4K 30 frames per second (up to 120 frames per second is possible at 1080p), but if you want to record with a GoPro, there is a mount available.
The M2 has a number of intriguing add-ons, including a motorized tether reel, or E-Reel, and a robotic arm that will keep the tether out of the way automatically. There’s also a swappable battery. If we could change anything, the lights would be further from the lens and brighter (they’re 2 x 2000 lumens), but on the plus side, there are accessory rails.
The Chasing M2 is a robust and versatile underwater drone designed for both professional and recreational use. It offers impressive maneuverability with 8 thrusters, allowing it to move in all directions and remain stable in strong currents. The drone can dive up to 100 meters (328 feet) and features a 4K UHD camera with a 152° wide-angle lens, capturing sharp and vivid underwater footage. It also supports various accessories like robotic arms, sonar, and external lights, enhancing its functionality. However, it’s on the heavier side, making it less portable than smaller models, and its premium price may be a hurdle for casual users. Overall, the Chasing M2 excels in durability, performance, and adaptability for demanding underwater tasks.
Pros
- Thrusters well protected
- Easy to control
Cons
- Lights could be brighter
Frequently asked questions
How deep can underwater drones go?
Commercial ROVs, or underwater drones, can typically descend to depths of 10 to 150 meters (30 to 492 feet). The drone must be stronger because the pressure acting on it increases with depth. The Titanic wreck, which is 4000 meters (13,000 feet) deep, has been extensively examined by specialized ROVs, and an autonomous underwater vehicle can even explore the Marinara Trench, which is three times deeper.
Are there any wireless underwater drones?
Since water prevents video and control signals from being sent, the majority of underwater drones have lengthy cables that are attached to the controls. One drone that defies this trend is the Hydromea Exray. It still requires a base with a cord close by because it employs “optical communication tech,” which flashes a light rapidly.
Do you need a license to operate an underwater drone?
No. There might be certain circumstances where specific locations are protected by local laws but, unlike aerial drones, ROVs have yet to attract the attention of legislators. It doesn’t seem likely soon either, since there is no risk posed to air traffic or falling onto someone.
